The biggest benefit of marine SSB radio are the “nets” — these are regular radio meet-ups that occur at certain times on a certain channels. During these sessions, boaters can swap weather observations and route tips with sailors hundreds of miles away or more. For voyagers making long trips solo or two-handed, these groups can provide a much-needed link with the outside world.

The PAB is a homing device that sends out an AIS signal when activated. So if you lose a MOB who has one of these devices, you can track their location on your chart plotter

EPIRB: When activated, an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) transmits its details on 406MHZ and, if GPS-enabled, the vessel’s position to within 100m. This signal is relayed by satellite to a base station, then the MRCC. Simultaneously, the EPIRB transmits a continuous signal on 121.5MHz, which allows search and rescue services to home in on its location using radio direction finders.

RADAR TARGET ENHANCER: The Echomax Active-X Radar Target Enhancer (RTE) is designed to respond to interrogating, band radar (9.3, 9.5GHz) by receiving, transmitted pulse and amplifying the pulse and re-transmitting the pulse back to the radar at the same frequency with minimum delay, thereby improving the radar detection range and visibility of small targets. It will not enhance significantly vessels with large radar cross-section.
